I entered the home health niche early in my career. Six months post graduation found me treating my first home health patient. As my confidence and skills grew in this physical therapy specialty, so did my love for this niche. So much so that I dedicated 20+ years of my career to caring for these precious, aging, elderly companions.

As the years added up, so did the multiple changes in how home health agencies were reimbursed. I sadly saw the home health career that I loved turn into a giant, money hungry business. I, like so many others in my field, was educated on how to “check the boxes” that got the high dollars. Many have been forced to commit fraud or lose their jobs. I choose the latter as the agency I worked for at the time demanded that I see a patient who was already being seen by another physical therapist from a different agency. I was fired on the spot for not being willing to commit duplication of services fraud against Medicare! Sadly, this agency is still in business.
